OpenAI’s chat models are already participating in real-time revisionism. Google’s search results now function similarly. In 2022, Google quietly rolled out a system called “Information Quality Updates,” designed to promote “trustworthy” content and demote “low quality” pages. In practice, this means results that deviate from institutional consensus are buried. The first page becomes a curated mood board of official narratives. The rest might as well not exist. The internet didn’t get smaller. Your access to it did.
Meta’s Llama models—already being rolled into WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger—are trained on filtered datasets and will soon become default context agents for billions of people. If these models remember a version of history that has been scrubbed, softened, or selectively amplified, then your conversations, your questions, and your curiosities will be answered with a hallucinated past.
Even archival platforms like the Wayback Machine are subject to takedown requests and “robot.txt” exclusions. Entire slices of online history can be de-indexed, delinked, or made functionally inaccessible without any announcement. What you can prove depends on what’s still cached—and increasingly, what’s cached is being shaped by legal, algorithmic, and political pressures.
The result is a kind of epistemic laundering.
Narratives can now be planted, scrubbed, and reintroduced as historical fact within the span of a few news cycles. A leak becomes a conspiracy. A conspiracy becomes a joke. A joke becomes a debunked meme. And a year later, the record reflects that it never mattered. It was always noise.
But the consequences are very real. When the historical frame is elastic, you cannot build a stable identity. You can’t say “this happened” with any force, because the record can be quietly updated to say it didn’t—or that it did, but not like you remember. Norman Finkelstein, a Jewish academic and the son of Holocaust survivors, was deplatformed and discredited for critiquing the weaponization of Holocaust memory by pro-Israel institutions. He didn’t deny the trauma—he named its political instrumentalization, and for that he was branded a traitor and pushed out of academia. Then came new stimuli. George Floyd. January 6. Ukraine. Uvalde. Israel-Palestine. Climate catastrophe. Balloon scares. Bank runs. UFO hearings. Always something new. Always something unresolved. The news cycle became a sequence of unclosed loops. Each one triggering outrage, grief, helplessness—and then silence. No resolution. No closure. Just the next trauma.
That’s not journalism. That’s programming.
It trains the public to live in a state of learned helplessness. To feel everything, but metabolize nothing. And in that state, memory breaks down. Events become impressions. Impressions become moods. Moods become affiliations. And affiliations become identity.
